Sacrifice.

Chapter One: Memory.

I opened my eyes groggily. My eyelids fluttered as I forced them open. The last few hours came racing back to my mind. I’d been sitting on a bench in a park when
someone had come behind me and grabbed me, I’d been sure that it was the same person that had been following me over the years. They’d had clamped their hand over my mouth, muffling my screams. A sweet and sickly smell filled my nostrils
and I’d gagged on it. I’d tried to scream again but my strength had failed quickly, whatever the smell had been it had knocked me out.
And now I was awake and lying on something hard from the cold, hard feeling on my back and on the back of my legs. I groaned and opened my eyes fully. A dark wood ceiling filled my vision, cobwebs covered it and a dark stain had spread out across the ceiling. I tried to move my limbs but something kept them pressed against the hard surface behind my back. I moved my head to the left to see thick, black bands around my wrists, locking me to the massive white marble slab. I looked at my feet to see the same thing, it was only then that I noticed that I was wearing an ankle length, white dress. On the front of the dress, in black ink, over my stomach, sat a symbol.
The Sacrifice. Pentacle
I whimpered, that damn symbol! It’d chased me all my life, and it was even on my skin, on the inside of my right wrist. I knew what it meant: I was the Chosen One, the sacrifice. I didn’t have a choice in the matter, but I didn’t want to be the sacrifice.
I noticed that about twenty people were stood around me in a circle, all of them wearing black robes with big hoods to cover their faces. There was someone else standing next to her, but they were dressed in white. Their face was covered by the white hood. Something glinted the in the light from the hundreds of candles around us. But before I could see the object in his hand it disappeared in the many folds of his cloak. he or she stepped forwards towards me, I tried to move but I was firmly held against the slab.
The person wearing the white cloak raised his hands and for the first time I saw what was in his hand: a dagger, with a silver blade that looked so sharp it looked like it could give you a cut from just looking at it. The handle was made
of gold, with a white stone set in it. I whimpered at the sight of the blade. It was
meant for me.
That was the blade that was going to end my life.
The people around us moved closer and they started to chant in a language I didn’t know. I screamed, trying to get off the slab. I struggled against the bands and screamed again. I’d not spent the last three months of my life trying to save myself to be killed now. I arched my back, trying to escape.
The person in white had joined in with the chanting. He positioned the knife just
over my chest and raised it high above his head. The chanting got louder, I struggled more and screamed.
The chanting got louder still; they were almost shouting it now. A clock chimed midnight. I screamed, knowing that at the last stroke the knife would come down. I struggled against the bands, desperate to get off the slab, to escape with my life and desperate to not walk out those doors as a spirit.
I counted the chimes, nine………ten………eleven………twelve!
The knife came down.
I screamed as it pieced my skin and kept going, the people were shouting now, screaming the words in their strange language. My breathing sped up as my blood pouring down my chest and onto the table. The last thing I saw was a face, an old and wrinkley face, telling me to rest in peace.
I died.
